Abstract :
Introduction: Abnormal uterine bleeding is defined as any abnormality in the frequency, duration, and amount in the bleeding pattern observed during normal mensrual cycles or menopause. FIGO in 2011, classifies AUB as structural (PALM) and non structural causes (COIEN) Aim of the study: The objective of the study was to determine the histopathological characteristics of the endometrium in women with AUB across various age groups within the population. Methodology: This was a retrospective observational study carried out at in the department of obstertrics and gynaecolgy, Christian medical college, vellore Chittoor campus, over a period of one year between november 2023 to October 2024. It included endometrial biopsies from patients with AUB after excluding any gestational causes. The relevant clinical details like age, clinical diagnosis, histopathological diagnosis were collected from the data base and analysed. Results: out of 330 biopsies done, majority of the patients fall under perimenopausal age group. 62%, 18% in reproductive age group, 20% in post menopausal age group. Out of 330 , the most common finding was proliferative features, followed by secretory phase. Among the post menopausal bleeding scanty or inadequate sample was the most common finding followed by carcinoma and proliferative features. Conclusion : Endometrial biopsy is mainly done to rule out endometrial carcinoma and hyperplasia. Greater awareness and improved access to healthcare services have also led to a rise in the number of cases presenting with AUB.
