Abstract :
Introduction: Menstrual health is a vital yet often overlooked issue, with traditional menstrual products such as disposable pads causing environmental concerns due to their plastic content. In response, alternatives like menstrual cups and sustainable hygiene products (e.g., organic cotton pads, period underwear) have gained attention. These products offer a more eco-friendly and health-conscious approach to menstruation management, helping address both hygiene needs and environmental sustainability. Aims and Objectives: This paper aims to explore the role of alternative menstrual products in enhancing menstrual health and sustainability. The key objectives are: 1.To assess the environmental and health impacts of traditional menstrual pads. 2.To evaluate the benefits and challenges of menstrual cups. 3.To examine the rise of sustainable menstrual products, such as organic cotton pads and period underwear. 4.To explore socio-cultural and economic factors influencing the adoption of these products. 5.To offer recommendations for increasing awareness and accessibility of sustainable menstrual products. Methodology: This study is an observation study conducted in 500 menstruating females using a questionnaire based survey to gather data on their product preferences, experiences with menstrual cups, pads, and sustainable alternatives, and barriers to adoption. This study was conducted in a tertiary care hospital involving patients as well as hospital staff. Conclusion: Alternative menstrual products like cups and sustainable pads present a promising solution to both health and environmental challenges. Despite barriers such as cultural stigma and access issues, these products have the potential to transform menstrual hygiene practices. Through education, policy support, and innovation, we can improve access to sustainable menstrual products and promote better health and environmental outcomes for menstruating women globally.
