Abstract :
Introduction- As India is the most populous country in the world, use of safe and effective contraception is the need of hour. Despite governments diligent efforts the acceptance of long-acting reversible contraceptive methods (LARCs) like copper intra uterine device and depot medroxy progesterone acetate(DMPA) are very low.
Aim-To compare the contraceptive efficacy of both methods, their continuation rate, failure rate and side effects among users.
Methodology-This prospective descriptive study was conducted in the department of obstetrics & gynaecology, government medical college Kota, Rajasthan on 143 women over 18 months November 2022 to April 2024.70 women opted LARCs as interval while 73 as post abortal contraceptive.
Results-The mean age of women was 28.19 years, most common complaint in IUDs users was heavy menstrual bleeding and in DMPA users decreased flow during periods ;The acceptance of Cu-T during follow up visits declined to 96.20 % at 6 week , 67.08% at 3 month , and 40.50 % at 6 months whereas in DMPA users at 6 week it was 100 % , 56.25% at 3 months , 43.75% at 6 months.
Conclusion- Majority of women opted Cu-T as post-abortal contraceptive and DMPA as interval contraceptive; Continuation of DMPA was more than Cu-T . Most common complaint was heavy menstrual bleeding in IUCD users and decrease flow during periods followed by intermenstrual spotting in DMPA. The declining continuation rate of both method during follow up emphasizes on quality counselling.
