Abstract :
Topic: ? Hydrolabour ? A positive birthing experience? A prospective implementation study conducted in tertiary care hospital in rural India. Introduction ? Hydrolabour , also known as a "water birth," means at least a part of the labor or the entire process , takes place in a warm water birth pool. Hydrolabour has known to have positive outcomes during labour like soothing the patient, easing her pain, hastening the labour , and causing less trauma to birth canal. Objectives- The primary aim of this study was to ascertain the effects of hydrolabour on maternal outcomes like 1) Trauma to birth canal 2) Duration of 2nd stage of labour 3) Pain assessment during 2nd stage of labour 4) Positive birthing experience 5) Other maternal and neonatal complications Materials and methodology- A prospective implementation study was conducted in a tertiary care hospital: MGIMS, Sewagram. Booked patient were counselled regarding hydro labour during their ANC visits. And after proper written and informed consent of patients and relatives, the patient who were willing were taken for hydro labour. Approval was taken from ethical committee. Consents were taken from study subjects after apprising them about the purpose of the study. Data was collected using predesigned questionnaire. Data was analysed by using appropriate statistical tests. Results- Study was done on 75 labouring patients. Vast majority of patients felt less anxious and more relaxed during entire procedure. On an average patients had shorter active phase of labour as compared to conventional land births. Patients had lesser requirement of analgesics during 2nd stage of labour. A significant reduction in episiotomies / 3rd degree perineal tears were seen. There was a reduction in maternal and neonatal complications like postpartum haemorrhage, birth asphyxia , NICU admissions etc. Conclusions ? When done under guidance of trained birth attenders and with proper precautions , hydrolabour has shown to have less maternal and neonatal complications . Patients undergoing hydrolabour have undergone an overall ?A positive birthing experience ? References- 1) Shaw-Battista, Jenna PhD, RN, NP, CNM, FACNM.
