Abstract :
INTRODUCTION : Lithopedion refers to fetus that has calcified or changed to bone. A lithopedion is one of the rare complications of ectopic pregnancy which manifests as a calcified mass in a part of the abdominal or pelvic cavity . Lithopedion also known as " stone baby" is derived from two Greek words , "lithos" - stone, "paiyon"- child. Its incidence is estimated to be 1.5%-1.8% of extrauterine pregnancies and 0.00045% of all pregnancies . They can remain asymptomatic for years until they are discovered incidentally during imaging or surgery. The age of patients with lithopedion ranges from 30-100 years and the duration of retention ranges from 40 -60 years . MATERIALS AND METHODS - CASE REPORT : A 27 year old P2L2A1with 2 previous cesarean sections reported with compliant of on and off abdominal pain since many years. On evaluation ,lithopedion was discovered in imaging , which was described as left adnexa with crumpled mummified fetus with crowded skeletal septum noted separate from ovary suggestive of chronic left tubal ectopic corresponding to 21 weeks period of gestation. RESULT : MANAGEMENT : Surgery was performed and the encased calcified mass was identified and removed carefully. After dissecting the mass ,bones were seen which could be arranged into the skeleton of fetus. CONCLUSION : Not all lithopedion are asymptomatic, some may present with clinical symptoms like abdominal pain, swelling .Although lithopedion is quite rare , proper and timely diagnosis can prevent complications caused by ectopic pregnancies .
